Description
The Paro Festival, also known as Paro Tsechu, is one of Bhutan’s most significant and colorful religious festivals, held annually in the Paro Valley. It usually takes place in March or April, attracting both locals and visitors. The festival celebrates the teachings of Guru Rinpoche, the revered saint who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan. During the event, participants perform traditional masked dances (Cham), wearing elaborate costumes and masks to depict various gods, spirits, and historical figures. The dances, along with ceremonial music and prayers, are believed to bring blessings and good fortune. The festival is a vibrant showcase of Bhutanese culture, spirituality, and community spirit, offering a unique opportunity to experience the country’s rich traditions.

Travel Itenerary
Day 1: Arrive in Paro, drive on to Thimphu
Arrive at Paro International Airport, where you will be greeted by your guide and transferred to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. This scenic drive offers breathtaking views of the Paro Valley and the surrounding mountains. Upon arrival in Thimphu, check into your hotel and relax. You can take a leisurely evening stroll around Thimphu, visiting local markets and getting acquainted with the capital’s serene atmosphere.
Day 2: Thimphu sightseeing
Start your day by visiting Buddha Dordenma, a giant Buddha statue that overlooks the Thimphu Valley. From here, enjoy panoramic views of the city. Next, head to Tashichho Dzong, a majestic fortress-monastery that serves as the seat of Bhutan’s government and the king’s office.
After lunch, visit the Memorial Chorten, a stupa dedicated to the third king of Bhutan, and the National Library, which houses ancient Buddhist manuscripts. Continue your cultural exploration with a visit to Simply Bhutan, an interactive museum that offers insight into traditional Bhutanese life.
You will have time to explore the Handicrafts Market, where you can find Bhutanese textiles, arts, and crafts.
Day 3: Thimphu- Punakha(Excursion to Punakha)
After breakfast, drive from Thimphu to Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan. En route, stop at the Dochu La Pass to enjoy stunning views of the eastern Himalayas. If the weather is clear, you will be treated to a magnificent vista of snow-capped peaks.
Afternoon
Upon arrival in Punakha, visit the Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most impressive architectural landmarks. The dzong is located at the confluence of the Pho and Mo rivers and houses the central monastic body. Spend time exploring the dzong’s courtyards, temples, and beautiful gardens.
In the evening relax in the tranquil environment of Punakha. You can take a short walk around the area or enjoy the peaceful riverside setting.
Day 4: Punakha – Paro (Paro for sightseeing)
After breakfast, drive back to Paro, a picturesque town rich in history and cultural significance. The scenic journey offers glimpses of Bhutan’s rural landscape, with beautiful valleys, villages, and rice fields.
Upon arrival in Paro, visit the National Museum and explore the quiet Paro town.
Day 5: Paro (Full day at the Paro Festival)
Attend the Paro festival that takes place at the majestic Paro dzong. Continue to enjoy the festivities, which often include rituals and prayers for good fortune. The festival offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Bhutanese spirituality and tradition.
Day 6: Paro – Hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery/ Spend another day at the festival
Today’s highlight is a hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktshang), one of Bhutan’s most famous and sacred sites. Perched on a cliffside, 900 meters above the Paro Valley, the monastery offers breathtaking views of the valley below. The hike takes approximately 4-5 hours, with a stop at a café midway up the trail for refreshments.
Upon reaching the monastery, take your time to explore its temples and experience its peaceful ambiance. Afterward, descend back to Paro. Return to Paro and relax after the rewarding hike.
Day 7: Departure
After breakfast, enjoy your final moments in Bhutan by either visiting local markets for souvenirs or taking a short stroll around Paro.
You’ll be transferred to Paro International Airport for your departure, marking the end of your memorable Bhutanese adventure.
